Archana Women’s Centre (AWC) propelled by its mission “fullness of life for all” is dedicated to empowering women through a conscious effort through its interventions. AWC is committed to promote physical, mental, psychological and spiritual empowerment of women through intellectual awareness and devolution of skills. The mastery of skills emancipates women from the clutches of societal servitude and the implementation of these skills empowers them to strike at the roots of poverty and its consequent ills. An equitable and just order, where all forms of social and gender discriminations shall cease and everybody irrespective of cast, creed or gender shall be enabled to enjoy an inclusive and abundant life in all its beauty and riches is the vision of AWC. The mission of the organization is to work towards women’s empowerment, leading to socio economic equality and harmony in occupational vicissitudes. The organization always stands as against the conservative model of interventions and showcase the courage and eagerness to intervene in areas where traditional welfare hasn’t concentrated.
The entire edifice of our social interventions is built upon the "Right" perspective - both the human as well as gender rights. The right to democratic practices, right to freedom, right to livelihood, right to a healthy environment, right to safe and secure social life, right to equality, and the list goes perhaps endlessly. We have realized that no amount of socio-economic projects can make the human life really worth living, if these are not interwoven with the human right issue and its ramifications. We have there-fore accorded a very high priority to the protection of human rights and its inviolable place in society.
A perennial problem agitating all women activists is the lack of a reliable source of genuine support in times of need. A full-fledged service providing center is functioning in AWC for the protection of women from Domestic violence. AWC working as a Service Providing Centre (SPC) which is assisted by Kerala Social Justice Dept.& KSSWB, Thiruvananthapuram. Promotion of gender sensitivity, equity and justice through awareness programs and campaign is the main motive of AWC. This centre is a sure repose of real help with effective legal aid at hand. This is supported by the State Women Welfare Board.
The Gender Resource Centre with SPC organized a number of programmes for legal awareness, gender sensitization, leadership, self defense etc. The participants includes police officers, vigilant groups of Panchayats, ICDS workers, school-college students, teachers, adolescent groups, women in short stay homes etc. Our workers were given training in self defense through Karate training raising their confidence, morale and capacity for self protection. We could influence and motivate college students to stage skits and flash mobs to high-light the issue of gender justice and how it is being violated every where at home, in schools, in public places and even in religious institutions.
In its run to empower women with skills, the AWC never forgot its primary responsibility to spread gender equality and women's rights. Sensitization programmes were held at every juncture to train the elected women representatives at the grassroot level in leadership, planning and egalitarian development. A state-wide gender campaign addressing the atrocities and conflicts against women and the girl child was also organized by reaching out to school and colleges in the important districts of Kerala. Some are in the forms of meetings, some are street theatre and drama. Perillatha Penkutty (Girl Without a Name), Subadrayude Jeevitham, Cicily Veendum Jeevithathilekku, Meera & Jennifer, Neerkazhcha are some of them. These were a sharp and poignant attack on our society that turns a blind eye towards the plight of its women.
Every year Women's Day Celebrations at the Archana Women's Centre are a well-executed affair with state-level campaigns on policy advocacy, social crimes, gender equality awareness workshops and other women's issues.
